Fall is my most favorite season in California. Not everyone knows how beautifully local areas transform during fall. Yes, California is not just unlimited summer! It has gorgeous and diverse seasons. Especially if you know where to look for them 😉

Northern California Fall Colors
I believe the best place to see fall colors in California is to drive along HWY 395. This takes you through the Eastern Sierra fall colors areas, which start in late September and peak through October.
Bishop Creek
One of the prettiest fall destinations, and it has a lot of different angles and areas for fall views. The colors start at the beginning of October.
North Lake
Located in Bishop Creek Canyon and is one of the most picturesque lakes to experience in Autumn. Check out this video that showcases North Lake
June Lake Loop
This area has a later peak time and a variety of pretty spots along a short loop drive. I suggest mid-October to see the most color.
Parker Lake
A beautiful trail that opens to a mirror-like reflection on the lake. It is located near June Lake so you can see both in one day if you want. It is a little over 3.5 miles round trip and a moderate trail. Check out this video for a peek at the beauty.
Convict Lake
Find yourself surrounded by nature’s magnificent Mt Morrison and crystal-clear Convict Lake. It is easy to access and has trails for hiking.
Aspendell
A true hidden gem for everyone who is late to the party because its colors peak later than all others. I suggest the end of October or very early November.
Bishop City
The city provides a ton of great resources on their website for travelers seeking a great display of fall color. This area is mainly residential with streets lined with beautiful trees that change from golden yellow to bright red. Bishop is known for its fishing, running trails, and landscape photography opportunities so it is worth a visit if you like any of those activities.
Conway Summit
This is a beautiful area to explore in any season but the fall is especially magical with the golden shades of yellow and orange. This is the highest elevation point on HWY 395 so it tends to peak earlier than other areas.
Virginia Lakes
Mid to late September is when you will start to see the color at Virginia Lakes. From Highway 395 at the top of Conway Summit, take Virginia Lakes Road for six miles. It is easy to access from the road or you can take a longer hike. This is a popular area for camping and fishing as well.
Lake Sabrina
This is a great place to rent a boat and spend the day on the lake to soak up the fall colors. It is also a popular place for camping and day hiking.
Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park typically changes color later in the season but it is also the most unpredictable. Snow can arrive early in the season and the foliage gets covered so do your research if planning to visit solely for the fall colors.
Hope Valley
Hope Valley is near Lake Tahoe and a less populated area to enjoy. I highly recommend staying at the Desolation Hotel Hope Valley (former Wylder Hotel). You will be surrounded by fall foliage there! You can make your booking here: Desolation Hotel on Booking.com
Southern California Fall Colors
San Bernardino National Forest
Travel tip: Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead offer gorgeous views that reflect into the lakes. Both are picture-worthy locations to visit!
In San Diego County, these are some gorgeous areas to visit.
Palomar Mountain State Park
Julian
Mt Laguna
Travel tip: It’s about an hour drive from Palomar Mountain State Park to Mt Laguna and Julian is about the halfway point. You could make a day of this route and enjoy the whole area at once.
California Fall Colors Tips
Aspendell and Bishop, the town, not the creek, will usually have fall colors two weeks after most other areas because of the difference in elevation. The lower the elevation, the later the colors will change.
“Snowliage” is a natural phenomenon when snowfall meets fall foliage. I was lucky enough to see a little bit of it in 2021 and made a video of what you can expect.
Utilize online webcams near your points of interest to see the latest live look at the area. Many of these cameras will show you glimpses of the scenery so you can judge how far along the colors are in the season. For example, you can google “Bishop Creek live cameras” or “Webcams in Mono County.”
Before you go, check out the California Fall Color map for a glimpse at the latest foliage report.
Now you are prepared and ready to enjoy the fall season and all the colorful splendor!
