Famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, luxurious beachside resorts, and vibrant coastal festivities, Cabo has been a popular tourist destination since the early 20th century. It later became a summer paradise for nearby Californians in the 1960s. Whether you’re looking for pristine white beaches, friendly and vibrant Mexican hospitality, or holiday luxuries, this Baja California Sur coastline has it all. I had the pleasure of visiting the area this month while working with CheapCaribbean, and it was a wonderful experience. So let’s talk about how to plan a perfect trip to Los Cabos, and what you can expect along the way.

Thanks to CheapCaribbean for sponsoring this trip!

Planning a trip to Los Cabos

How to get there

Los Cabos is only a 2.5-hour flight from Los Angeles and San Diego and roughly 3 hours from San Francisco. You can also get there by bus or road trip, but I’d recommend the flight, as it’s cheaper overall and more comfortable. You can book your flight on the CheapCaribbean website, along with your transfers, resort stay, and excursions.

How to get around

While Los Cabos does have a public bus system, a more relaxed option to get from town to the beach is by renting a car or booking a private transportation service. Luckily, since the area is such a popular tourist destination, you’ll have a lot of options.

I booked all my Los Cabos transportations through CheapCaribbean using Amstar DMC. They plan excursions all around Central America and the Caribbean, and they have all sorts of transportation options, airport transfers, and excursions.

Hotels

Hotels and resorts are some of the best parts of Cabo. Since there are so many of them, though, looking for the right one in your budget can be a little challenging. If you’re trying to find the best flights and hotel deals in Cabo, CheapCaribbean might be a great option for you.

CheapCaribbean packages

CheapCaribbean is an online travel company that is focused on selling all-inclusive beach vacations to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. When planning my trip to Los Cabos, I used the CheapCaribbean Beach Finder tool to find various hotels and flights. I really loved how I could just book it all together at the same time!

The hotel I booked was a good introduction to the warmth of Los Cabos. Here’s a quick look into it!

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos

We chose Secrets as our resort because of its stunning ocean views, gorgeous suites, all-inclusive delicious food, and convenient location. It’s an adults-only retreat, just 30 minutes from the airport and only 10 minutes away from San Jose del Cabo. I got lucky enough to check out a few of the suites in the resort, so here’s a quick review of them.

Rooms

The first suite I tried was the Junior Suite with Ocean View. It was located on the fourth floor and was very comfortable. It has a balcony with a hot tub, a massive bed, and a lovely look at the ocean.

Junior Suite – Ocean View

The Master Suite Ocean View is similar to the Junior one, but with more space, a bigger hot tub, and two separate balconies.

Master Suite – Ocean View

The last one is the Presidential Suite Swim Out, a spacious and gorgeous suite with a big pool right outside the porch, which makes it very convenient to enjoy the water. I really love the Swim Out feature, and the good news is there are a variety of rooms with it. If you want, you can upgrade a Junior or Master Suite to a Swim Out version!

Resort Amenities

The resort has a variety of amenities, including a full-service spa, multiple swimming pools, a fitness center, daily activities, live entertainment, and access to a golf course. Here are some pictures of what you can find there.

The main pool area is huge, with several sections, tall palm trees and mountain views.

The Main Pool

There’s also the Preferred Club Pool, a beautiful infinity pool with great ocean views, perfect for relaxing in a quieter setting.

Resort Restaurants

Now to my favorite part: all the amazing all-inclusive food options. In total, there were five gourmet restaurants, a buffet, a grill, and a cafe in the resort. These were three of my favorites:

Portofino

A romantic, sunset-lit Italian restaurant with a fully stocked wine cellar. The food was absolutely delicious and I really enjoyed the outdoor seats.

Portofino

Oceana

A seafood restaurant placed right by the water. We booked a great table next to the large archway looking out into the ocean, and it made for a nice evening in Los Cabos.

Oceana

El Patio

A Mexican restaurant with authentic cuisine and flickering light decorations. The food was as warm and welcoming as the ambiance, and it had a vibrant Latin American atmosphere.

Room service

A great part of our all-inclusive package was the 24/7 room service, which I happily used to treat myself several times.

Room service

We really enjoyed our stay at Secrets, as it had everything we could have hoped for in an all-inclusive resort. However, if you’re looking for other options in different locations or more family-friendly resorts, you can explore the CheapCaribbean website or use their Beach Finder tool to find the perfect spot for your next getaway.

CheapCaribbean Beach Finder

The Beach Finder tool in CheapCaribbean's website.

The Beach Finder Tool

There are three main ways to use the Beach Finder:

  1. Browse Everything: This option lets you find deals in your destination on certain dates. It’s pretty easy to navigate–all you have to do is fill out the choices in the left sidebar. Then, the Beach Finder will gather all the available flight and accommodation deals for you.

  2. Shop by Calendar: If you’re looking for the most affordable prices in a specific month, the Shop by Calendar method comes in handy. It gives a full calendar list of the best prices all year round.

  3. Shop Map: Know exactly where you want to stay but want to compare the different resorts and hotels? This option gives you a full map of nearby resorts in your destination, and a clear view of their prices on your specific date.

When you sign up to CheapCaribbean for the first time by email or SMS, you can also get $150 off your first booking. I had a great time with their services, so I’d recommend checking them out for your next trip!

Things to Do

Los Cabos is split between two main regions with a transition area in between. These towns (San Lucas and San Jose) actually have varying attractions, so we’ll look at them both and the Corridor separately.

Cabo San Lucas

Known for its beaches and luxurious resorts, San Lucas is the most popular area of Los Cabos by far. Its summertime atmosphere is what makes it a staple visit of the region, and there are a lot of options you can check out while you’re here.

Take a cruise

The Sea of Cortez in Los Cabos has its share of amazing views. Cruises are great for enjoying them, and there are numerous ships you can book along the coasts of Medano or Lovers Beach.

Tu Enamorado Piers and Cruises

There’s a variety of ships and tours, so they’re very flexible in their schedule and routes.

We booked a dinner cruise on the Tu Enamorado Yacht through Amstar, and the trip had lovely views and a relaxing atmosphere. Overall, it’s a breathtaking way to take in the Sea of Cortez. You can find the Tu Enamorado ships at their private docks in La Terminal on Cabo Marina Tu Enamorado.

Sightsee at Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco)

Make sure to add the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas when planning your trip To Los Cabos. We got there right at sunset! It was fantastic to see the arch this up close.

El Arco

The Arch of Cabo is at the southernmost end of Los Cabos. It’s the most iconic landmark here, and it was definitely the first thing on my itinerary. You can also access it by boat along Medano Beach or the Marina.

Looking up close, you can see the granite arch has been carved out from wind and water over a long period of time. Some of the locals call it the ‘Land’s End’ due to its location. Knowing that, it does feel like a gateway out of Los Cabos and into the sea.

Swim in Medano Beach

The white sands of Medano Beach hold the warmest and calmest waters of Cabo San Lucas. Unsurprisingly, it’s become a hotspot for all types of beachside activities. You also get a faraway look at El Arco, along with a few other sailboats offering a trip to the arch.

The Corridor

The Corridor is a long strip of land connecting the two Los Cabos regions: San Lucas and San Jose. In between are a stretch of famous resorts and beaches, which makes the area great for relaxing while traveling between the two halves of Cabo.

El Chileno Beach

Chileno is a great getaway spot if you’re looking for something quieter and more soothing. The waters here are cool and fine, and there are a few spots where you can swim and explore the underwater sealife.

Santa Maria

Surrounded by rocky cliffsides in a round, shell-like shape, this beach has shallow waters that make it perfect for snorkeling. If you’re planning on diving, go in the morning to get the best views of the waters.

San Jose del Cabo

Secrets was actually located in San Jose, so I got a very good look into the region as a whole. Many people treat San Lucas and San Jose as the same place, but San Jose is more relaxed, artistic and dreamy. It still has many beaches, but the main draw of San Jose are the cultural hotspots and the national parks.

The Gallery District

The cobblestone streets of the Gallery District honor a Latin American tradition of colorful art and decoration on display. Technicolor banners hang all over this district, with street-side snacks, music performers, sculptures, and paintings resting underneath.

Cerro de las Chivas

You may see Cerro de las Chivas (Chivas Mountain) in the distance as you enter San Jose since the mountain itself is very close to the town. The trailhead is right beside Forjadores Boulevard. The climb inclines upward, but the hike itself is short and moderate. You’ll get to the top in around 45 minutes, and the whole trip will take just over an hour.

Cabo Pulmo National Park

While an hour and a half away from San Jose del Cabo, the Cabo Pulmo National Park is still a great attraction for marine life enthusiasts. There are a couple of snorkeling excursions and tours provided by divers in the area, where you’ll get to greet the life in the coral reefs and visit a fantastical sea kingdom below.

Cabo is a perfect getaway for travelers looking to unwind, and I’m so glad to have gotten the chance to experience it myself. Be sure to check out CheapCaribbean when planning your trip to Los Cabos or to look for more beachside deals for your next vacation!
