Are you looking for a travel guide of things to do in Point Reyes? I compiled a list of all the highlights you will want to check out if you make the trip!

Point Reyes National Seashore is over 70,000 acres of preserved seashore located an hour north of San Francisco in Marin County. The rugged coastline, stunning beaches, and dramatic cliffs create a picturesque landscape that you will love! The wildlife thrives here due to it being protected land, from birds to seals, animals can be found just about everywhere in Point Reyes.

Note: Point Reyes is protected by law and prohibits visitors from taking anything found within the preserved area including shells, rocks, fossils, flowers, artifacts, adorable squirrels. Please practice the leave-no-trace principles to ensure this area can be around for generations to come.

South Beach Overlook

For the iconic views of crashing waves along the coastline, the South Beach Overlook is a 0.2-mile walk from the parking lot. The beach is visible from many spots, including the parking lot, you can’t find a bad view from this area.

Point Reyes Lighthouse

Access to the lighthouse requires an easy 1.3-mile hike along a paved road and taking 300 stairs down to the lighthouse itself. Once there, you will be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Don’t forget to check the lighthouse schedule before going to ensure it is open during your visit. Take time to explore the history of shipwrecks along the coast as it will give you a whole new perspective on the history and dangers of maritime workers.

Pointe Reyes Shipwreck

Also known as the Tomales Bay Shipwreck, the Inverness Shipwreck, or the S.S. Point Reyes this is an iconic photography spot with a history of being in a state of decay. To find it, navigate to the Inverness Store on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. You will find parking along Tomales Bay and it is a short walk from there but I suggest wearing shoes you don’t mind getting wet.

Stargaze the night sky

Point Reyes National Seashore is designated as a Dark Sky Park and is the perfect place to stargaze and try your hand at some astrophotography. The lack of light pollution allows for clear views of the night sky. If you want to capture the stars, utilize the long exposure settings on your camera for best results.

Cypress Tree Tunnel

One of the most beautiful tree tunnels in the world! The cypress trees are one of the few species that have been able to adapt to the coastal weather in Point Reyes. No hiking is required to enjoy this scenic spot and it is a great place to take photos to capture your visit. The best time to photograph is after sunrise from the side of the white building.

Farm Tour with Hog Island Oyster Co.

Shuck your own oysters and learn the history of Hog Island while enjoying the full oyster barn experience. The Whole Hog experience lasts approximately three hours and you get to see if you have what it takes to shuck oysters like the pros, have chef tasting dinner, and learn more about what it takes to harvest oysters sustainably while preserving sealife.

Enjoy a meal at Tony’s Seafood

If a full oyster farm tour isn’t your idea of fun and you simply like to enjoy the local cuisine, be sure to check out Tony’s! This restaurant is part of Hog Island Oyster Co. and is known for its freshest seafood menu. There is also live music on the weekends.

Chimney Rock Trail

This is an easy 2-mile roundtrip hike that leads you to spectacular views. You’ll have the chance to see elephant seals, pretty wildflowers, and of course the jaw-dropping cliffs. Don’t forget to fuel up the car, charge your phones, plan your routes, and bring snacks and water as resources and cell service are extremely limited.

Try a local favorite- Station House Cafe

This is a local favorite! Station House Cafe offers a family-friendly ambiance but with a locally sourced and organic menu. Station House Cafe has been serving it up since the 60s and features a magical little outdoor garden dining area.
