Take a scenic ride on Lake Osceola in charming Winter Park. From cranes scoping out their catch of the day, alligators brooding on the river banks, and grand estates on the shore, you will see and learn all about the history of the oldest community in central Florida. The dock is within walking distance from The Alfond Inn and leaves each hour on the hour so you can catch a tour at your convenience during your visit.
A short drive from downtown Orlando, you can paddleboard with manatees or take a kayak tour in clear bottom kayaks with Epic Paddle Adventures. The waters are calm so you can make your way down the river and take in the scenery. During the cooler months, manatees are often spotted at Silver Springs State Park and are a tour highlight.
Rock Springs
There’s no better way to experience the beautiful turquoise waters of Florida than in a clear-bottom kayak. Get Up & Go Kayaking in Kings Landing offers a one-of-a-kind experience. This kayak tour includes a beginner to intermediate paddle upstream with a relaxing drift back to the launch site. There are also portions where the water is deeper and guests can go for a swim. Throughout the adventure, you may have the opportunity to see local wildlife like alligators, otters, turtles, and more.
Explore 50 acres of lush gardens including the largest camellia collection in the South, a stunning formal rose garden, and a butterfly garden. There are miles of paved paths that will lead you between a tropical stream garden, bamboo and palm gardens, and a historical house museum. Nothing will show you the beauty of “old Florida” like the Leu Gardens.
Winter Park is a charming postcard-worthy area that has hundreds of boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. These are the stops I recommend if you want to explore the area!
The Winter Park Distilling Company The first genuine artisanal distillery in Winter Park and Metro-Orlando, offers locally handmade distilled spirits
Rifle Paper Co. The stationary and lifestyle brand was started right here in Winter Park. You can visit their flagship store and shop all the IG-worthy paper goods and products that earned the brand so many devoted customers.
The Ravenous Pig Chefs James and Julie Petrakis earned James Beard nominations for their American gastropub menu that utilizes local fresh ingredients. Stop by for brunch or dinner and be sure to enjoy the beer garden for a casual patio ambiance.
Prato Featuring local seasonal ingredients and sustainable Florida seafood, Prato is a Michelin-recommended Italian restaurant. You can enjoy Italian classics with a modern twist and year-round patio seating. From pizzas to pasta and everything in between, this would also be a great spot to try for happy hour with a great wine selection.
There is no shortage of coffee shops to try for your morning jump-start or afternoon pick-me-up: Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Co., Foxtail Coffee Co., New General, and Austin’s Coffee.
Peterbrooke Chocolatier
Indulge in the gourmet handmade chocolates and bring home a sweet souvenir like truffles, boxed assortments, and a variety of delicious chocolate-dipped treats.
The Wine Room
Select a wine from over 150 different bottles and pair it with a charcuterie board for the perfect finish after a day of exploring. There is also a menu of small plates, flatbreads, and desserts if you are looking for more. There are dozens of specialty cheeses to compliment your wine and vegan options are also available.

This luxury boutique hotel is known for its elegant and contemporary design and sophisticated atmosphere. With a rooftop pool, luxury rooms, and Hamilton’s Kitchen restaurant on-site, The Alfond Inn was the perfect place to stay for our visit to Orlando. The hotel is a unique concept as it also serves as a visual arts museum, showcasing a valuable collection of contemporary art. The Alfond Inn also stands out for its philanthropic mission, as the proceeds from the hotel go toward supporting student scholarships at Rollins College.
Where to dine while visiting Orlando, Florida
The menu features farm-to-table dishes, freshly prepared with a modern culinary twist using local seasonal ingredients. We had an amazing dinner at Hamilton’s Kitchen followed by dessert and an after-dinner drink at The Café. The space is beautiful and decorated with an early 1900s theme in a new wing that just opened for evening drinks and dessert. Hamilton’s Kitchen is located at The Alfond Inn, which makes it very convenient for guests.
