Martin County, Florida is where warm ocean waves and white sandy beaches are ready to welcome you as you relax and enjoy some fun in the sun. This lesser-known tropical retreat is located on the Treasure Coast of South Florida and has a small-town charm and whimsy spirit to it. One of the most alluring qualities of Martin County is how it feels secluded like a private hideaway but with no shortage of activities. There are so many things to do in Martin County with over 22 miles of beaches and over 100,000 acres of parks and conservation land it is the perfect place to enjoy a Florida getaway. The wildlife is so beautiful and diverse here, we were able to see so many unique bird species while exploring. I was surprised to learn Martin County has the most bio-diverse lagoon ecosystem in the entire Northern Hemisphere. Martin County is known for its whimsical artist communities with luxury oceanfront retreats and downtown districts with a variety of award-winning restaurants, shops, and activities. Things to do in Martin County

St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park

Walking the boardwalk at St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park in Martin County, Florida.

This state park is only accessible by boat as it is a barrier island. Because of that it never gets crowded. You can walk a boardwalk through local foliage like mangrove forests and paradise trees. I even saw an armadillo here, and while they are not a native species, it was still fun to see.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

The largest state park in southeast Florida and also contains the highest point in South Florida, Hobe Mountain. I recommend taking a ride on the gorgeous Loxahatchee Queen Pontoon Boat Tour and learning the mysterious history of the “wildman of the Loxahatchee.” You will also find numerous wildlife species, hiking and biking trails, and horseback riding paths.

Loxahatchee Queen Pontoon Boat Tour

From the Loxahatchee Queen pontoon boat, you will get to explore one of Florida’s “wild & scenic” rivers. You will learn the history of the river, “Wildman of the Loxahatchee,” and about the diverse wildlife that calls the river home. This two-hour tour is led by a licensed captain and you can enjoy the leisurely river ride while seated.

Hobe Mountain

86 feet above sea level and the highest natural point in Southern Florida, Hobe Mountain can be found in Jonathan Dickson State Park. Hobe Mountain was once submerged in the Atlantic Ocean and as the sea levels fluctuated the mountain was formed by high winds and the crashing of ocean waves. Jonathan Dickinson is the only state park in South Florida where visitors can hike to the top of this ancient sand dune.

Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve

Ocean coastline at Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve in Martin County, Florida.

The preserve is known for its conservation efforts to preserve endangered plants and species. It earned its name from the way the ocean waves crash into the rocky shore during high tide and can be “blown” up to 50 feet in the air, it is quite a sight to see. There are also a few hiking trails throughout the preserve where you are likely to see rare sea turtles who call this area home thanks to the restoration of the land. The best time to visit is during high tides and windy days when the waves dramatically crash at the beach rocks.

Bridge Road Tunnel of Trees

Martin County has countless tree tunnels, you will see them even if you don’t look for them because they are everywhere. One of the most popular tunnels is a picturesque stretch of Bridge Road. It looks like it came straight from the pages of a fairytale. The towering tree tunnel makes for beautiful shots, especially when the light dapples through the lush canopy. To find it, simply enter “Tunnel of Trees” into your GPS, it will be just before the Bridge Road bridge that leads you to Jupiter Island.

Savannas Preserve State Park

Savannas Preserve State Park in Jensen Beach is one of five state parks in Martin County. There are over 17 miles of trails that can be used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park also offers guided tours for hiking or on the water in kayaks. We took the Hawks Bluff Trail and I am glad we did, you get to experience five natural habitats all within a one-mile hike. The hike can be as long or as short as you like but your guides will make sure you stop at the most photogenic points in the park.

I found the Spanish moss enchanting, which you can find all throughout Florida. I learned the moss is actually an herb in the pineapple family and native to the area. With all the moss hanging from the tree limbs and swaying in the breeze, you feel like you are stepping into a cottage-core fairytale.
