I love Balboa Park and always make time to visit whenever I am in San Diego. The area is filled with great scenery, museums, exhibits and restaurants but is also a great place to take some photos! Balboa Park and all of the buildings within it are registered landmarks so there is a lot of history to enjoy when you visit. I created a interactive map that showcases all the places listed so you can plan your visit. Whether you are familiar with Balboa Park or it’s your first time exploring, I hope this guide to its best photo spots helps you on your next trip!

Lily Pond
Even though the Botanical Building is currently under construction, the lily pond views are still very pretty! This is one of the most photographed areas in San Diego and it is located right in the heart of Balboa Park near the Timken Museum of Art. You can stroll along the pond, stop on a bench to take in the view or just relax in this little oasis among the hustle and bustle of San Diego.
The Botanical Building is known for its many varieties of plants and exotic flowers. I can’t wait to see the renovated building.
Spanish Village Art Center
This is one of my favorite spots for pictures! There are vibrant artist studios and a colorful cobblestone courtyard that makes this little area feel so whimsical! The Spanish Village Art Center is known for its charming Spanish-style architecture, diverse artwork styles, and gives the ability for visitors to engage with the artists. This area is especially beautiful when the Jacaranda trees are in bloom, which is usually late spring through early summer.
El Prado
El Prado is an architectural gem! The promenade is lined with trees and features buildings with Spanish-Renaissance and Spanish Colonial Revival styles. You can find museums, galleries, and even a science center. There are often events taking place on El Prado like concerts, festivals and exhibitions for the artists.There are beautiful gardens and landscaping to enjoy that is surrounded by walkways to get to the other areas of the park.
The California Tower & Museum of Us
The California Tower at The Museum of Us is the most recognizable architectual landmark at the park. The tower makes the Balboa Park skyline what it is and utilizes Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. Thanks to the beautiful buildings, this area has a pretty backdrop from a variety of angles that make for great photos!
The museum changed its name from the “Museum of Man” to the “Museum of Us” in 2020 to reflect a more inclusive perspective. The name change is also a result of the museum’s commitment to representing the diverse human experience across many cultures.
The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden
I love getting lost in the rows and rows of beautifully manicured rose bushes at The Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden. The water fountain and sweet fragrant blooms make this a serene spot to stop and take in the beauty. The peak bloom is in spring but let this not stop you from visiting during other times! You can find beautiful roses from March through December. For example, these pictures were taken end of July. The garden is named in honor of Inez Grant Parker, a prominent San Diego civic leader and philanthropist. You can find the garden just north of the San Diego Natural History Museum.
Japanese Friendship Garden
Japanese Friendship Garden is designed to encourage visitors to walk its winding paths and enjoy a moment of mindfulness or meditation. This peaceful oasis incorporates aesthetics and cultural elements of a traditional Japanese garden, like the koi ponds and Bonsai displays. It is also as a symbol of friendship between San Diego and its sister city, Yokohama. You can stop at the tea pavilion known as the “Ogawa Yakata.” Visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, cultural events, and educational programs related to the historical Japanese tea culture.
Alcazar Garden
Alcazar Garden is made to emulate the gardens of Alcazar Castle in Spain. This is a vibrant spot ideal for photos that features colorful displays of roses and a variety of other flowering plants.The focal point of this formal garden is a water fountain that serves as the center of the geometric layout. This is also a great place for stopping with a picnic or taking in the views.
Palm Canyon
With a full two acres and 58 species of palms, there is no where quite like Palm Canyon. Some of the palms date back to 1912 and is a great place to find a little shade during the hot California days. This is such a fun and unique place for a unique photo op. You can find Palm Canyon near Pan American Plaza, behind the Mingei Museum.
Spreckels Organ Pavillion
Spreckels Organ Pavilion is home to the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world! Organ concerts held as the highlight for this pavillion as guests can free concerts throughout the year featuring a diverse range of musical genres. The architecture of this building was crafted with stunning detail and while beautiful in photographs is even more impressive in person.
Best Places To Eat Near Balboa Park
After you’ve explored and worked up an appetite, be sure to stop by one of these restaurants for a unique dining experience!
Panama 66 – For a casual counter service meal, Panama 66 is a great stop! They offer a wide selection of beer, wine and cocktails with a cool menu of sandwiches and salads. It is also conveniently located right inside the park at The Sa Diego Museum of Art.
Prado – For a more elevated experience, try The Prado that offers a menu suitable for those with an adventerous palate and looking to enjoy dishes made with Spanish-infused flavors. Plus, you get to dine right in the heart of the park at the Historic House of Hospitality.
Mister A’s – This is my favorite restaurant! It offers a menu that is French-inspired and served with elegant skyline views. They are brunch, lunch and dinner and also offer live music on select nights. Note: Mister A’s does have a business casual dress code policy that they strictly enforce so prepare accordingly.
insideOUT – This restaurant and lounge was created based on the concept that you go inside to get to the outside. They feature seasonal art installations that make for a unique dining expereince you won’t find anywhere else! The menu is traditional coastal California-style food with excellent cocktails.
Mothership – You will be immersed into a fully themed cosmic vegan restaurant that space and astronomy lovers will enjoy! Every detail is made to enhance the astro theme and the menu is excellent, too!
Communal Coffee – This is a super chic cafe that focuses on providing communities with a gathering place with seasonal menu and craft-style drinks. From small plates to cappucino, you can grab a quick bite and take home a beautiful bouquet of flowers!
